Health Information Specialist
Duties: Health Information Specialists
obtain, post, and analyze medical, workload, finance, and insurance data.
They make sure that this information is recorded into medical records so
practitioners can plan health care to the patients. There a varies of specialties
in this field like Registered Record Administrators, Accredited Record
Technicians, and Certified Coding Specialists. The administrators coordinate
the information management responsibilities and supervise the record
technicians and the coding specialists. Record technicians ensure medical
records are up to date and maintain disease registries for research. The specialists
assign the correct diagnosis and procedure codes to records and report cards
tot eh insurance companies.
Salary:

Education:
Students should
take high school classes in business,
information management, science, math, and English. Coding specialists must
have a high school diploma or GED certificate. Training is on the job, though
classes are offered at technical schools and community colleges. To
become certified as a specialist they must pass an examination. The accredited
record technicians need to earn an Associate’s degree from an accredited college.
If not then they need to earn it from an American Health Information Management
Association Independent Study Program. They must also pass an examination. Record administrators must have a
bachelor's degree program in the field and pass a certification examination.
