The statement means
that in order to be the greatest and to be at the top you need to work hard. The
road to this success may be tough but it’s the destination that counts not the
journey. An example of this is when you’re studying to be a principle, but you
must first become a teacher in order to go higher in your journey. The statement
is explaining that you can either go an easy nice road that involves not so
many good things or the rough one that leads to a great destination that you
would be happy with.
